The Sharing Shelf provides tampons or pads to each menstruating girl we serve. Girls are empowered to let us know what they prefer - tampons, pads or a mix of both. We add these items to their bag plus a new pack of underwear.
Unfortunately SNAP benefits, commonly known as food stamps, do not cover menstrual products. While New York State passed a law excluding these items from sales tax, low-income teens and women must still purchase these monthly necessities using their limited resources. Since Covid hit our county, we have also supported food pantries and community groups that request menstrual products for their female clients, both teen and adult.
We accept donations of tampons, pad and mini-pads. We encourage volunteers to create period kits, with a month's supply of maxi-pads or tampons and mini-pads combined with a pack of new bikini underwear (sizes youth 12 through women's 20).
